Review
Praise for Abandoned in Hell“An epic tale of junior officers and NCOs salvaging a clusterf**k with minimum losses and maximum damage to the enemy. Nasty war. Great book.”—Jim Morris, author of War Story and Above and Beyond “A riveting, dead-true account in the tradition of Black Hawk Down and We Were Soldiers Once...and Young.”—Steven Pressfield, national bestselling author of The Lion’s Gate “Abandoned in Hell is essential reading about the brave men who lived and died fighting an unpopular war.”—David Hume Kennerly, winner of the 1972 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography“Wolf and Albracht have interwoven the history, the tumult of battle and the spectrum of personalities that turn up on a forlorn red dirt hill on the Cambodian border in the crunch year of 1968. Firebase Kate becomes a microcosm of the turn of events, the disasters that were the death knell of the Vietnam war. It’s a story that grabs you by the throat and won’t let go.”—Tim Page, Photojournalist and author of Another Vietnam“This gripping, gritty and cinematic blow-by-blow account of outnumbered Americans locked in a desperate battle with the North Vietnamese Army is destined to become a classic of its genre. If you read only one book about Vietnam this year, this must be the one.”—Major General Paul Vallely, US Army (Ret.), Two-tour Vietnam Veteran, Fox News Senior Military Analyst, and author of Endgame: The Blueprint for Victory in the War on Terror“This extraordinary narrative about leadership, loyalty and trust grabbed me from page one. It should be required reading for anyone who wants to know what really happened in Vietnam.”—Rocky Bleier, Decorated Vietnam Veteran and Four-Time Super Bowl Champion“A riveting look at a little-known but compelling Vietnam War story.”—Publishers Weekly“Albracht and Wolf present a vivid, often gripping account of the attack by 4,000 members of the People's Army of Vietnam...This fast-paced narrative encapsulates Vietnam War themes, significantly the bravery of grunts and company grade officers and their loyalty to one another.”—Library Journal

I read Abandoned in Hell in three sittings over a two day period and I found it to be very well written and researched. Being a Vietnam combat veteran myself I can very well comprehend the anguish and frustration that Captain Albracht must have felt being denied the support and supplies that were needed to defend Firebase Kate. When Captain Albracht was wounded he was given a ticket out, but he chose to stay and I am greatly surprised that Captain Albracht only received the Silver Star award for commanding Firebase Kate when his actions went far and above the maximum required performance of any member of the military.
A well written, accurate, detailed account of what took place on that small hilltop in the Central Highlands of Vietnam in the Fall of 1969. Surrounded and outnumbered by a vast enemy force the American and Montagnard soldiers bravely defended Fire Base Kate. Finally after five days of continuous battle with the enemy and failed attempts at getting reinforcements, running dangerously low on water, food and ammunition, the order was given to evacuate the hill. Special Forces Capt (Green Beret) William Albracht, led the American and Montagnard force on a daring and dangerous night E&E (Escape & Evasion) through heavily enemy infested jungle.Capt Albracht's outstanding leadership, calmness, courage/heroism and professionalism during the entire five day battle and E&E off the hill and his refusal to be evacuated after being wounded, are in this man's opinion the reason I'm here today. I was there. Another outstanding leader and Special Forces soldier I would like to mention, Sgt Dan Pierelli. His leadership, courage/heroism also outstanding. If you are interested in reading a good book on the Vietnam war, then this is a must read.Nelson F. Koon
When you read this book, even though it happened in 1969, you will get frustrated at the politics that put our soldiers in such horrible situations. It is sad that recognition always seems to come to soldiers later in their lives, never when they are still young and so deserving of it. I watched the documentary about Firebase Kate and that was what made me look for literature on it. I was pleased to find this book. When I read it, it was even better than the documentary, as books often are. If ever a movie should be made about heroics and bravery in war, Vietnam, WWII, or Afghanistan, this would do it. I cannot even imagine what it must have been like to be surrounded on a hilltop, alone, with two regiments of NVA determined to wipe you off the face of the earth. Great book!I have to say, I have read some of the one star reviews and I just don't understand that kind of thinking. One of them was so idiotic, it stated that the real hero of this book was the man who led the relief force. Yes, that brave soldier deserves credit for his courage and ability, but what about the guys at Kate who were only awake because of Army issue Benzadrine or whatever upper they had to take to be able to remain standing after 5 days of siege, beating back attack after attack. Running to the different hot spots with M-60s or M-79 grenade launchers to help support the Montagnards defending that side of the perimeter. Someone else wrote that the book was sophomoric. I swear it seems so many males want to read about combat in an arm chair with a cool drink beside them and judge a book by the author's use of literary devices. So strange that anyone could rate this book lower than a 4. I think 4 is too low. GREAT BOOK! AMAZING STORY!Last of all, It is truly remarkable that the two dozen Americans made it out. (I agree with the author when he says there was some sort of divine intervention, especially on the way out when they took the 'wrong' turn at ambush hill and saved their lives). Probably not so for the brave Montagnard Strikers that stayed in country after the United States pulled out. I was pleased to see that the author dedicated the book to those brave men that fought alongside them.
This read is gripping, compelling, stunning and accurate. Marvin Wolf, a decorated Vietnam Veteran himself, does a superb job of capturing the technical accuracy of the situation and evoking the emotion at the same time. I have heard this story in parts since Hawk came back from Vietnam. While I heard all or most of the stories, I never heard the entire saga from end to end. I was stunned to the point of goose bumps while reading the full accounting of the story all the way through. You are right there with Captain "Hawk" Albracht, Sgt Dan Pirelli and the rest of the American Artillerymen and Montagnard Soldiers getting pounded by NVA Artillery and fighting off superior forces and their ground assaults! Outnumbered 40 to 1, This young Green Beret Captain in his first taste of combat fought off one of the elite fighting forces of the North Vietnamese Army! Through his heroic leadership, 150 American and Montagnard lives were saved. The title implies and illustrates how this band of brothers was abandoned even if inadvertently by the politicization of the war in Vietnam. President Nixon's policy of "Vietnamization", that is turning the battle over to the ARVN Army, was a failure regarding Firebase Kate. With ample ARVN troops within striking distance to refortify, resupply and even rescue them, They were told NO by higher command. The Americans couldn't and the ARVN wouldn't! Escape or die trying was their only option. It is a truly compelling story of leadership under fire and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
