In fact, professional soapmakers used to be called soap boilers and shared a patron saint with firefighters. As far as I can tell, the kind of soapmaking now called hot process was the rule for both family and commercial soapmaking all the way up to around 1940. At that time, companies that manufactured lye began to market it for home soapmaking, which was falling out of fashion. The new method came to be known as cold process -- a term I've found from as early as that same period, in a lye company pamphlet. Though in cold process the soap mixture isn't "cooked," it isn't really cold either, as its temperature usually falls somewhere between room temperature and 110 degrees F (43 degrees C). Still, cold process seemed simpler, possibly safer, and was less intimidating to beginners. So, as craft soapmaking became popular, cold process was the technique favored in many books. More recently, soapmakers adding milk to their soaps have come up with a version of cold process that truly does involve lower temperatures. In my book "Milk Soapmaking," I called it Cool Technique. It uses frozen liquid to counteract the heat generated by the dissolving lye. This aims to keep the milk as cold as possible, to avoid browning the milk sugars and darkening the soap. After writing that book, I continued to refine Cool Technique. But more important, I discovered that its usefulness goes far beyond milk soap. In fact, it can help wherever high temperatures cause problems of scorching, fumes, acceleration, or other unwanted reactions.Â

I must say I have ordered all of Anne L Watson books on soap making because I like her description on how to make soap. She has great techniques on soaping that is old school and there is nothing like having a great teacher who know her stuff to teach you how to properly make soap. I highly recommended her books to anyone who want to learn how to make soap. There are a lot of books on soap making but not everyone has a break down on how to formulate a soap or the percentages of the amounts need to incorporated a good formula. Her techniques are simple and easy to follow like her books short and to the point.

Not tons of new information but her books are clear and easy to understand. Her no-nonsense writing style makes her instructions easy to follow. I'm glad to add this to my collection but if you are a beginner, get Smart Soapmaking, it will give you enough solid information to get off to a confident start. If you add Milk Soapmaking to that one, you don't really need this one, but for the price, I was happy to add it to my collection.

Excellent, solid foundation of knowledge on soap making. All of the advice in this book is based on science and well-founded personal experimentation and it shows. The recipes in here that I have used have been top notch. My husband particularly likes the recipes for beer soaps, but I'm looking forward to making some cucumber soaps this next summer with produce from my garden. Thanks for making another excellent book, Anne Watson!

Anne Watson is the absolute best at explaining soap-making in a clear way without being alarmist. Cool soapmaking (keeping the ingredients cooler so the lye compound won't scorch) opens a whole new world of soap-making. I've already followed her very solid advice on cool soapmaking with milks, and am looking forward to trying cucumber juice. Wonderful book!

I just love all of this authors books. She explains the soap making process in such a way even beginners are successful in making soap. Plus, when I had a problem I was able to email her, and she promptly answered my questions.

I can't wait to try a couple of the recipes, Coconut Beer Soap especially. This was a really informative book and great for soapers who have a few successful batches in their belt. If you're a beginner, however, I suggest you get your technique down before jumping into any of this.

Excellent book. Love her approach and the way she explains and simplifies soap making!I made her Shea Butter Supreme soap for my first batch ever and it worked perfectly. The soap has a great lather. I love it! Going to experiment with scents on the next batch.

I really enjoyed this book about soap making. It is easily understood and I believe I can make soap! I have not made any yet, but I do intend to try it, thanks to this very informed and easy to follow book.
