In 1945, the French Army was attempting, post-liberation, to rebuild itself and to reclaim colonies in the Far East lost to the Japanese. Few French forces were immediately available for deployment. Those that could deploy were often reinforced with armored vehicles to enhance their mobility and firepower. This is their story in Vietnam.Author Simon Dunstan offers a brisk account of the First Inchochina War and the role played by various armored vehicles. The equipment was a grab bag of surplus, much of it U.S., left over from the Second World War. Despite exceptional difficulties with the terrain and with the Viet Minh, the armor seems to have served a variety of useful purposes. However, the author's summary suggests that a wrong impression was given to the next Western power to seek battle in Vietnam. The text is nicely enhanced with lots of period photographs and modern illustrations. Well recommended as a concise and interesting account.
