I am 61 yrs old and played in a few Chicago aggregations myself. I waited for this book a long time- I think Steve Krakow did an excellent service to the diverse Chicago Music scene ( unfortunate for me, I’ve had 3 eye surgeries- I can’t read the print so well) this leads to my only suggestion,- a version with text as well as the hand written print. I miss a few things- sad , you mention nothing on Reggie Boyd , Steve,( as well David Bloom a Reggie Boyd Acolyte and great educator/ musician in his own right). I remember these wonderful days, Otis Rush w/ Alberto Gianquinto, 4 Days and A Night ( later, Aura)- I played a bit w Al Lathan and more extensively w/ his younger brothers Warren and Tommy. But damn- I shouldn’t name drop ( though in the arms of nostalgia , I indulged a bit). Man- you covered a lot of ground! Hal Russell! Pete Cosey, Phil Cochran to Wilderness Road, Baby Huey the Flock, the 5 Stairsteps and Terry Callier. Your history dead on. Keep up the good stuff. Many more great musicians. MADURA( Hawk Wolinski, Addison Al DeCarlo Michael T) Weapons of Peace. Avril Ra and Rollo Redford went on w Sun Ra. Keep drawing keep writing. Sorry I didn’t proof read this. I’m typing from cellfone and my eyes not good now ! 100 stars. Wonderfully hip stuff. Hats off, Crimewave !
I have been reading these in the Chicago Reader for years...nice to have them in a book. Love this information about obscure groups.....FAWN were in there, and they were one of my favorites to listen to back in the 70s. Now you need to expand it to other Illinois groups like The One-Eyeed Jacks, The Guild (St. Louis based(, The Jay Barry Group (alsol St. Louis), Faustus (St. Louis)....Suburban 9-5 (early REO)..
Great articles and drawings
Liked all the history of the bands.
Amazing collection of over 200 illustrated columns that appeared in the Chicago Reader for over a decade documenting Chicago's vast music history. A gem of a book for anyone that loves history, music, and culture. You'll find yourself lost in looking up the musicians and listening to their records, and probably going out to hunt for them also.
