I am new to doing public relations and this book does a great job of covering the basics to help me build a PR plan for my IT consulting business. I was looking for something simple, and this book makes doing your own PR seem a lot easier than I thought. Some things I liked best about the book: - The author doesn't assume you know everything about PR and explains each aspect very well. There is even a good glossary at the end so a novice like me knows what everything means! - The section on using an agency vs. doing PR in-house was a big eye opener! The book basically goes through all the things an agency does and how you can do it yourself. - There's a lot of stuff on social media with some tactics to try for each of the major social media sites. I found the LinkedIn and Twitter advice to be the most helpful. - Press releases are covered in a lot of detail - how to write them, how to send them out and then how to get media contacts to cover them. The book also gives you a link to a press release template and a checklist for steps to follow for creating and sending out press releases. - The media outreach section is also very thorough, and the free media guide you can download seems like it will be a good way to stay organized contacting journalists.All in all, I am happy I bought the book because I think it will be a good reference as I try to do my own public relations for my business.

I very much enjoyed this book. As a small business owner wearing many hats, I don't have all the answers, so knowing where / how to get answers is absolutely key. This book provides a great road map for navigating the world of PR and leveraging current technology and online tools. There are a lot practical solutions and approaches to PR challenges and opportunities - with good examples and ideas to do my own PR. It will have a prominent place on my desk as a handy reference.

Learning about new techniques for anything always takes a lower rung on the priority ladder.PR Tools to Toot Your Own Horn, gave me everything I need to know about getting free or almost free public relations exposure in one book. I highly recommend it.It goes into strategy and tactics, showed me how to write a PR release with confidence so I don't look like a novice (or a jerk) and taught how to keep the PR pipeline going. Best of all it showed me that I don't need to spend a lot of scarce resources on PR but can do it all mostly for free.There's a list of PR books in the back for more reading although I don't think I will need it. Also, the list of tools and resources alone is worth the price of the book.

Great easy read! Full of tips and actual strategies for public relations campaigns. Great for a newbie or even a pro. Tips for media list building, press rooms, pr and media plans and even includes some free Downloads.

Just what I was looking for to figure out how to do PR for my business. I don’t have money in my tight budget to do much marketing, let alone hire a professional public relations person. This book has already helped me learn how to write press releases and send them out, and come up with some local PR ideas so that people in my community know I exist!
