About the Author

As a teacher, Brenda Ehrmantraut spent years filling notebooks and journals with stories and ideas. Night Catch was inspired when her brother deployed to Iraq and Brenda wanted to create a story that would connect and comfort his family during their year apart. About Night Catch, she says, "I love hearing how parents and grandparents get choked up reading it; it makes me feel like I've made a human connection and a tiny little difference." Brenda feels honored to play a small part in supporting the sacrifices military families make through the distribution of her book. Brenda was a reading and language arts teacher in Ohio and Washington before having children of her own. She and her husband, a minister, live in Beresford, South Dakota, where she continues to work in education.

This book is precious. It's not about "a boy with a baseball", as one reviewer said; rather, it turns the very simple concept of playing catch (something practically every child would know how to do) into something that can be done with a parent even when they are across the world. I am reading it nightly with my 8-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son (we change words like son/guy/boy to kids/friends so it applies to both kids) during a year long deployment. After the story, we go outside and blow our star to Dad. It's a fun routine for everyone but is especially meaningful to my older child. Staying connected during long absences can be a challenge and I consider this book and our routine with it to be a very helpful tool.

A friend suggested this book to me after my son was having a difficult time with Daddy away. We have many books on deployment, however my oldest prefers this over the others. This book is beautifully written and the illustrations really bring the story alive, showing the bond between father and son lives on regardless of the distance between them.

I've been looking for a book to help explain my husband's recent deployment to our 4 year old. This book is perfect! Really easy read and applied perfectly to our life. Every time they talk on the phone now, they throw the star back to each other when they go to bed for the night since there is a time difference. My son asks to read "the book about Daddy" every day. Such a fun way to help him understand.

I'm in the military and going through a really long technical school. Its been really hard on my 3.6 year old. He LOVES LOVES LOVES to read this book with me, through not as much with mom when I'm gone, but it seemed to get him to understand that I was leaving but I would come back. I suspect when I eventually have to go on a deployment and he is a bit older and able to understand more of the book, it will be even greater.

This is an excellent book. The only thing is in one part about catch in the park the wording confuses my son because it's mixed up. It's not something people say everyday. But it has a way to help find the north star in the sky and tells you about it in the back. Also has a place to put a photo of parent and child. My son loves it!

Such a perfect book for children with deployed parents. I absolutely recommend it to anyone in that situation, this story is incredibly special.

My husband is getting ready to deploy for the third time and currently away at training for the next six weeks. I purchased this book (and two others) to help my 4-year-old daughter understand why her Daddy has to be away and how we can still be close to him. This book was a huge hit with my daughter and she searches for the North Star every night now. I would definitely suggest purchasing this book to help kids with deployments. Another excellent one, and my daughter's new favorite, is called Lilly Hates Goodbyes. I'd look that one up, too!
