I have never written a review before, but felt I owed this to Alda for her extremely informative and extremely readable book for tourists in Iceland. I would strongly disagree with reviewers who considered this book negative, or light on information about where to go and what to do. Alda writes openly, directly, and with a great sense of humor about modern Icelandic politics, environmental problems (and why it's so difficult to address them), safety hazards for tourists (both human and natural), Icelanders' view on the tourism explosion in the last decade, and dispels some myths surrounding her country. There is a list of Icelandic websites at the back of the book for information on accredited guided tours, checking weather, and more. Many of the travel guides I have consulted in the past were written by "professional" travelers, who are also foreigners in the countries they visit - I found it refreshing to get a native Icelander's perspective on the tourism explosion in her country (a blessing and a curse) and the Icelanders' response to it (both positive and negative). I have all the information I need to plan this trip very easily with this "Little Book" and I also know to travel with toilet paper, a digging trowel, and to be sure to get naked and wash VERY THOROUGHLY before entering the pool :-)

I really enjoyed the book. Since I watch Icelandic media I wasn't surprised by the stories of the "dark side of Iceland" (read: politics and corruption in this case). Iceland has a great image in foreign countries as a kind of Utopia, where everyone is nice, everything works, you can camp where you want, break into cottages if you want (saw that in a German movie actually) and locals are just fine with that. Well, no. I really appreciate the hard work that is needed to bust a myth and Alda is really funny while doing it. So don't be sad that Iceland is not like the country that you dreamed of when looking at the photoshopped pictures that you can find all over the internet. It's not perfect. Take it as an opportunity to learn more about this peculiar place with the 'is-that-from-The-Lord-Of-The-Rings?' kind of language. And to think more about one's behavior when travelling in general.The part that I appreciated the most was the one about how not to piss off locals and about ICE-SAR. They should sell some small items all-year-around to help them with funding. I would definitely buy them. Oh and the part with silly tourists questions, that made me laugh out loud.So all the luck to Alda and all the luck to Iceland. It was fun to read.

This book is a refreshing and enjoyable antidote to the guidebooks that direct tourists to the most crowded and over-exploited places, completely fail to make any suggestions about how to tread lightly, and confine essential safety information to a a paragraph of fine print between currency information and customs regulations. Ms. Sigmundsdottir puts things in a better perspective and does it with humor, balance, and style. Some reviewers have suggested that she rants about government corruption and inaction, but to me her precise accounting never sounded strident or dogmatic, just good reporting. Visitors can benefit by knowing as much as possible about the places that visit, and this book is filled with insights and advice which can help us enjoy our visit, stay out of trouble, and maybe even not upset our hosts. It is a wonderful read.

You can tell the author loves her country by reading this book and it is Very well written. But from the perspective of a person that has always lived in a tourist area I understand the great need of tourism and the money it provides. She seems to speak about problems that "Iceland" faces as if they were exclusive to Iceland. Rent and wages are problems everywhere so are infrastructure, healthcare, police forces, wanting to keep the environment clean and unencumbered by power lines. Unfortunately if tourists didn't come to Iceland when they did and save the economy, there might not be an Iceland to go visit. Am I still going to visit Hell yeah, will I be a responsible tourist yes ma'am. But I do believe that change happens whether we like it or not.

This little book was fantastic. Of all the travel books I read before arriving in Iceland, I felt like this one was the most informative. I felt like I understood quite a bit about how the tourist industry has changed and affected modern Icelandic society. I was also keenly aware of the toilet paper blowing everywhere and glad to know why, as well I as why I met very few Icelanders on my trip and why they didn't really invest any energy in getting to know visitors. I guess the only negative I could say about this book was that it made me less excited to visit Iceland. I think if I had read it before I booked my travel, I would have gone somewhere else that wasn't drowning under the tourist load. EDIT: I also want to be clear that I did not think the author was being whiny or snarky or trying to convince people not to travel. To me it seems obvious that she thinks there are both positives and negatives from the tourist industry. and she presents a fairly unbiased view of what's going on. It was an entertaining read, and honestly I somehow wish it was required reading of everyone visiting.

It's so depressing. Seems like the author does not really like Iceland. He talks about the corruption and many negative aspects of the Island. Cynical tone to the book.

A good read, especially if you want to learn about the impact of tourism in Iceland. Informative and mostly interesting. But this is not a tourist guide. Not that it says it is. I just assumed it would be more of a tourist guide. It was a good, quick read. Just not exactly what I was looking for as we prep for a trip to Iceland. Although we will be more mindful of how we impact the country and will strive to not ask stupid tourist questions.
