A teacher's job is to help students access the curriculum. Educators implement a standardized format - the Common Core Standards - designed for each subject and grade area. It is an objective and metric-based learning dynamic designed to reach a broad spectrum of students.The authors of the Behavior Code argue that a subset of students are unable to access the traditional curriculum because of emotional and behavioral challenges. They recommend an individualized approach - called the FAIR Plan - to help these children.An educator compiles an ABC (Antecedent, Behavior and Consequences) Data Sheet based on the student's challenging behavior: anxious, oppositional, withdrawn or sexualized. The FAIR Plan is then implemented within the regular classroom to modify the negative behaviors that interfere with that child's learning (and, presumably, the learning of their classmates).The accommodations that the authors suggest for the extreme mental health needs of individual students are provocative - especially those allowing children with sexualized behaviors to participate in mainstream classrooms. The highly personalized and subjective nature of these labor-intensive intervention plans gives this entire work an anecdotal feel despite the professional aegis of authors Minahan and Rappaport.The authors advocate and outline how to field-test mental health accommodations by well-meaning educators in a classroom model with little oversight or input from the stakeholders in the educational community - including parents of the other students in the classroom. I don't want my child used as a "lunch buddy" to a child with "non normative" sexualized behavior.There's a need to be met for these kids, but the FAIR plan, despite its catchy acronym, isn't it.
I just started reading this book. I’m only 30% through the book. However, I have already started to understand the behaviors of my 15 boys and 6 girls. Many of my students exhibit avoidance behaviors. Of course they are my strugglers. They struggle to read, they struggle to write, one is a perfectionist and I have to separate him from his mother daily. I cannot wait to put some of these interventions to work after Christmas break!
Excellent book. Excellent. Would give it more stars if I could. I am a BCBA working with children diagnosed with SED. This book is chock full of practical knowledge and strategies. BUY IT!
I heard Jessica Minahan speak at a conference this summer; I ordered her book right after the keynote. The book is an excellent resource, aimed at teachers with practical ideas about to change one's own behavior toward challenging students to help them achieve more-expected classroom behavior. I have spoken so highly of the book that others have bought it on my recommendation.
As a parent, I believe that all kids feel anxious, angry, or depressed occasionally. School can be tough on bad days, but we need help at home, too. The Behavior Code methods may be designed for the schoolroom, but I am so happy to have something to try at home, too! Just a couple of tips have helped already! Every parent can use this advice. We want to do everything we can to help our kids and give them good life tools. This book really helps.
This is a great book because it doesn't try to do too much. It gives a specific framework and strategies for handling some of the toughest student behaviors. Great for special education professionals.
This book has made such a positive impact on my family. The strategies and tools that are taught in this book can be used universally in schools and home. They can be easily applied by teachers and parents. I am so thankful for the validation this book gives to children suffering with anxiety. It should be a staple in training all public school staff members. If you have or know a child suffering with anxiety this book is a must!
